His Excellency Lyonpo Lok Nath Sharma, Minister for Ministry of Economic Affairs today inaugurated the 2.1 km Bir Kulo Irrigation system, which was constructed by Department of Agriculture through Food Security & Agriculture Productivity Project (FSAPP). FSAPP is funded by Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) Trust Fund through the World Bank. It is a five years project which started in 2017-2018 fiscal year and will end on 30th December 2022.
Some of the key features of Bir Kulo irrigation system include:
- Type: HDPE pipe-full length, 280mm diameter
- Total pipe length: 2.1km
- Total command area: 150 acres
- Total Beneficiary Households: 53
- Total Cost: Nu. 17.5 million
The inauguration was attended by Ms. Kinlay Tshering, Director of Department of Agriculture, Ms. Kesang Tshomo, Program Director of Agriculture Research and Development Centre (ARDC) Yusipang, Project officials, Dasho Dungpa and staffs of Dungkhag administration, three gewog gups under the Dungkhag, regional heads and the beneficiaries of the irrigation system.
His Excellency Lyonpo Lok Nath Sharma also formally handed over the Constitution and Bylaws of the Water User Association (WUA) during the inauguration, which was prepared under the coordination of Project Management Unit and Dzongkhag in consultation with the beneficiaries. The WUA is formally called “ Somlachen & Mithun Bir Kulo Irrigation Water Users Association (SMBKIWUA) “
The WUA members were also trained on Operation and Maintenance of the irrigation system by the Project Engineer from Department of Agriculture few weeks ago before the inauguration.
